About the Rural Public Library Fund

The fund was first established with the launch of the Dorothy Louise Kyler Foundation, now known as the John Henry Eldred Jr. Foundation. Its purpose has always been simple and steadfast: to help small, rural public libraries in underinvested communities grow their children’s circulation and sustain meaningful programming for young readers and families.

Since our founding in 2012, we’ve had the privilege of supporting hundreds of libraries across more than 30 states, investing over $2 million in their work including our most recent grant cycle in 2025. We are honored to stand alongside library staff, volunteers, and community members who make these welcoming spaces possible.

2026 Rural Public Library Grants

  • The Rural Public Library Fund extends grant opportunities to selected libraries on an invitation-only basis. If you are one of the preselected libraries, you will receive a mailed invitation to apply. In 2026, libraries throughout the Southeastern U.S. will be selected following the regions identified by the Association for Rural and Small Libraries.

  • Applicants can request up to $5,000 in support of collection development and support for children’s materials, including but not limited to e-books and digital audiobooks, programming, and equipment or supplies.

    • This grant is for small, rural public libraries by invitation only.

    • The application will open in August 2026.

    • Applications must be submitted online using the link included in the invitation letter.

    • To ensure an equitable review process, late or incomplete applications cannot be accepted, and deadline extensions will not be granted.

  • If you have any questions, please reach out to us at info@jhefoundation.org
